At Door Rx, we’ve seen just about every DIY rescue you can imagine, but the good news is that wood is super forgiving and can almost always bounce back like it never happened.  I am a huge advocate of fixing things around the home yourself, and hope this information can help those of you who have the spare time to tackle this project, to do so. A LOT of variables go into professional refinishing and finish work in general, but if you can avoid these pitfalls you are well on your way.

Aggressive sanding is by far the most common. Leaning hard on a sander or using the wrong grit can create wavy spots, deep scratches, or even sand through a thin veneer, which is extremely hard to hide later.

Sanding against the grain, which leaves cross‑grain scratches that only show their full, ugly glory once stain hits them.

Skipping a thorough cleaning before applying any product; trying to coat over oils, dirt, or old residue leads to poor adhesion and peeling.

Choosing the wrong products for the door’s material. Wood, metal, and fiberglass all need different primers and finishes, and cheaper all‑in‑one paints or stains often don’t hold up on an exposed exterior surface.

Rushing dry times between coats; if the base isn’t cured, the top layers can wrinkle, bubble, or fail early. Each of these is fixable, but the fix usually means sanding back and doing more work than if it had been done right from the start. That’s exactly why many homeowners decide that for something as important as the front door, calling a pro is less stressful than rolling the dice with trial and error.
